Overview

Sleep, cook, and walk with the families who live in Laos's highlands.

Laos is home to close to fifty ethnic groups, and the northern uplands are where their villages still shape daily life. This programme is built together with the communities themselves — you sleep in a family home, cook over a wood fire, and walk the trails villagers use every day. Not a staged performance, but a few ordinary days shared with the people who live there.

Group sizes stay small and a fixed share of every booking goes straight into the village fund. Best from October to April, outside the heavy rains.

Highlights

  • Overnight homestay with a Khmu family
  • Akha village in the Muang Sing valley
  • Hmong silverwork & batik textiles
  • Lanten indigo dyeing & bamboo paper
  • Forest trek guided by a village elder
  • Cook and share a highland family meal

Day

01

Luang Namtha — Market, Museum & Briefing

Arrive in Luang Namtha and walk the morning market where highland families come to trade. Visit the ethnology museum for background on the province's groups, then meet your village guide for a briefing on homestay customs and etiquette.

Day

02

Trek to a Khmu Village & Homestay Night

A half-day walk through rice terraces and forest with a village elder who reads the trail — its plants, traps, and spirit markers. Arrive by afternoon, help prepare dinner over the fire, and spend the night in a family home.

Akha & Lanten Villages, Muang Sing Valley

Continue north to Muang Sing. Spend the day between an Akha village and a Lanten community known for indigo dyeing and handmade bamboo paper — with time to try both alongside the makers.
